SAN JOSE, Calif. — Tristan Wouters scored in the eighth minute as UC Davis earned a point in its first Mountain West men's soccer match with a 1-1 draw at San José State on Saturday night.
The Aggies moved to 0-5-4 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play, while the Spartans are now 3-4-2 overall and 0-0-1 to begin Mountain West action.
Wouters gave UC Davis an early lead with an unassisted goal at 7:44, his first of the season. The midfielder had already tested San José State goalkeeper Ronin Axelson with a shot on target in the third minute before putting the Aggies ahead.
UC Davis carried its 1-0 advantage into halftime, with each team recording six shots in the opening period. Talin Morgan denied Daniel Fregoso Bautista in the 27th minute, while Axelson stopped an attempt from Declan Horio in the 32nd.
The Spartans outshot UC Davis 7-2 after halftime. Morgan saved a Fernando Duarte attempt at 55:36 to protect the lead, but San José State drew level at 80:00 when Neo Ruiz scored off an assist from Angel Gutierrez.
Morgan kept the match tied with his third save of the night, turning away Fregoso Bautista with 2 minutes, 31 seconds remaining.
San José State finished with a 13-8 advantage in shots, a 4-3 edge in shots on goal and nine corner kicks to UC Davis' one. Wouters led the Aggies with two shots, both on target, while Horio recorded their other shot on goal. Axelson finished with two saves for the Spartans.
UC Davis returns to Aggie Soccer Field to host Air Force at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, in its first Mountain West home match.
