STANFORD, Calif. — A hat trick from Oleg Shatskikh led UC Davis men's water polo in a battle with former conference foe UC Irvine in day one of the MPSF Overnght Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Following a first quarter strike from the Anteaters, Shatskikh found his first of the night a minute into the contest.
  • As Irvine scored the next four into the second quarter, Shatskikh went to the back of the net again for his second goal.
  • Thomas Kiesling followed that up with his first score to help rally the Aggies to score four of the last five in the first half.
  • Tallies from Timothy Kerr, Lucas Ruano, and Max Prokhin made up the rest of the scoring in the first 16 minutes, putting their team within one, 6-7, at halftime.
  • Coming back into the pool, things were knotted up at seven apiece 30 seconds in off a score from Colton Fine.
  • Shatskikh secured a hat trick and Kiesling put up his second of the game, but Irvine entered the final quarter with a 10-9 advantage.
  • Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Oriol Viñas got on the board off a powerplay to put his team within striking distance.
  • However, the Anteaters would tack on four more in the final period, giving them a 14-10 victory.

UP NEXT: Davis will return to action in Stanford on Saturday, Sept. 19 as they compete against new conference opponent LMU at 9:20 am PT. Depending on the outcome of the matchup, the Aggies will continue the day at 1:40 or 3:00 pm PT.
