Rex Connors and Drew Cofield Named Top 15 Returning Defensive Backs by HERO Sports

DAVIS, Calif. — The preseason accolades continue to pour in for UC Davis football players Rex Connors and Drew Cofield. Both players have been selected as two of the top 15 returning defensive backs for the 2026 season by HERO Sports. Cofield came in at number 15 on the list, while Connors was ranked number three.

A team captain in 2025, Connors appeared in four games before suffering a season-ending injury but still delivered standout performances. He recorded a season-high 15 tackles against Utah Tech, earning both Stats Perform FCS National Honorable Mention Defensive Player of the Week and Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week honors following the victory.

Connors also reached one of the most significant milestones in program history during the 2025 season, becoming UC Davis' all-time leading tackler with the 313th tackle of his career against Washington.

Playing his freshman season back in 2025, Cofield has quickly risen the ranks as one of the best defensive players the Aggies have to offer. Being one of only two true freshmen to start every game last season, he ended the year with 36 tackles, two interceptions, and 11 passes defended.

By the end of the year, Cofield separated himself among his conference peers by being named an All-Big Sky Second Teamer along with an FCS Central Freshman All-American nod. Coming into his sophomore campaign, he's already received FCS Central Preseason All-American and Preseason All-Big Sky awards.

The Aggies are back on the field with the season opener up in Portland State on Aug. 29. The home opener will be on Sept. 19 in the non-conference finale versus Stetson.
