DAVIS, Calif. — As the dog days of summer begin to creep in and parents begin back-to-school shopping for their kids, football programs all over the country begin training for the long, grueling season ahead. This was no exception for No. 5 UC Davis football, who finished day one of fall camp on Thursday, July 30.
"This is obviously an exciting time when you get the full 105 guys together and you're out there doing some football again." Said head coach
Tim Plough. "It's that feeling of joy that you get when you're out there with the guys again, and we've had a great offseason. Looking forward to a great camp, building the team up, and seeing what we got when we get this thing kicked off here in August."
Just like last season, Plough and his coaching staff will be taking things light to begin camp, likening the style to the NFL and its preseason OTA practices. "I kind of want to think of it like a plane taking off. We're going to ease our way down the runway here the first six days before jumping into it."
Following those first six days, camp will begin to heat up with three days of high intensity practices, followed by a scrimmage, before cycling through that process one more time.
After the second scrimmage on Aug. 14, preparation will begin for the Aggies Week 1 matchup against Portland State.Â
Starting the season with a Big Sky Conference matchup will put more emphasis on Plough's team to be ready to come out of the gate strong. "I don't know if anything changes in regards to our prep, but any game that's a conference game has more value. It's strange to be playing that one early, but I'm a big proponent of the nine game conference schedule."
Following the trip up to Portland, Davis will have two more road games at San Diego and SMU to begin the season before the home opener against Stetson on Sept. 19. Montana will be the first Big Sky team at UC Davis Health Stadium in a big matchup on Sept. 26.
