THE SHORT STORY: UC Davis baseball fell 5-3 to CSUN in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Hiegert Field.
Ryan Lee's solo home run in the fifth inning pulled the Aggies to within two, but UC Davis could not breakthrough late, as the CSUN bullpen held it down to help secure the series Sunday.
LEADING OFF
- Ryan Lee went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the fifth
- Keenan Anzai drove in a run with an RBI single in the fourth
- Joey Wright added an RBI sacrifice fly in the third
- Jack Pezzolo (1-2) took the loss, working 4.0 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits with four strikeouts
- Rowen Barnes turned in 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out one
- Eli Solem worked a scoreless fifth, allowing one hit and striking out one
- Rowen Barnes continued his excellent season with 3.0 scoreless innings of work, allowing only one hit across his appearance
- Braydon Wooldridge, Elijah McNeal, and Tyler Howard each had a hit for the Aggies as well
HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUN broke the scoreless tie with a three-run second, capped by Matthew Pena's two-RBI double down the left field line and a Colton Boardman RBI fielder's choice.
- UC Davis got on the board in the third on Wright's sacrifice fly that scored Jack Castagnola, who had reached on a passed ball and stole second.
- Anzai cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to score Korey Williams.
- CSUN answered with two in the bottom of the fourth on Andrew Becker's RBI single and Matthew Thomas' sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-2.
- Lee pulled UC Davis back within two with a solo homer to left field leading off the fifth.
- The Aggies stranded the tying run in the fifth after Howard singled and Everet Johnson reached on an error.
- UC Davis went down in order in the seventh, eighth and ninth as the CSUN bullpen helped fuel the series win for the Matadors.
UP NEXT
UC Davis returns to action Monday, traveling to Fresno State for a 3:05 p.m. first pitch. The Aggies then return home Tuesday, April 21 to host Sacramento State in the first Causeway rivalry matchup of the season.
