THE SHORT STORY: UC Davis baseball opened its weekend series at CSUN with a statement win Friday night, riding a 14-hit attack, three home runs and a dominant start from
Keenan Anzai to an 11-3 victory at Hiegert Field. The Aggies scored in five different innings, put up double-digit runs on the road and got multi-hit nights from four different batters, while Anzai worked seven innings of one-run ball to move to 4-2 on the year.
LEADING OFF
- Anzai earned his fourth win of the season, tossing 7.0 innings on 106 pitches and allowing one run on seven hits with two strikeouts
- UC Davis hit three home runs, with long balls from Kai Mault, Korey Williams and Braydon Wooldridge
- Tyler Howard reached base five times and scored four runs, going 5-for-5 with three doubles
- Mault finished 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and four RBI to pace the Aggie offense
- Williams added a 2-for-5 line with a home run and three RBI
- Wooldridge went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, a double and two runs scored
- Four different UC Davis batters recorded multi-hit nights
- The Aggies did not commit an error and turned two double plays in the field
- UC Davis went 14-for-39 as a team at the plate
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UC Davis put up three runs in the top of the first on back-to-back doubles from Wooldridge and Howard, an RBI single from Williams and an RBI groundout from Mault
- Anzai settled in with a scoreless second and worked around a hit in the third to keep the Matadors off the board
- The Aggies added three more in the top of the third on Williams' two-run homer and Mault's solo shot, with Howard adding a double in the frame
- UC Davis broke the game open with a four-run fourth, highlighted by Wooldridge's two-run homer, Felix's RBI single and Mault's RBI double
- Mault capped the Aggie scoring with an RBI single in the sixth to push the lead to 11-0
- Anzai completed seven innings of one-run work, giving up a Coleman RBI single in the bottom of the seventh
- Tyler Wood worked a clean, three-strikeout eighth before CSUN scratched two across in the ninth on a Jehee Lee RBI double and a Will Linberg sacrifice fly
- Wood closed out the 11-3 win for UC Davis
