THE SHORT STORY: UC Davis put forth a strong offensive effort with 10 total hits, taking an early 3-0 lead, but Cal Poly rallied late. The Mustangs scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete the comeback and hand the Aggies a narrow 5-4 loss on Sunday afternoon.
LEADING OFF
- Tyler Howard led the Aggies offensively, going 3-for-5 at the plate, highlighted by a solo home run in the fifth inning.
- Joey Wright delivered a clutch two-run double, finishing 1-for-4 with a run scored.
- Eli Burnham produced a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
- The Aggies tallied 10 hits as a team, including four extra-base hits (three doubles and one home run).
- Cal Poly's Alejandro Garza delivered the decisive blow with a two-run home run in the seventh inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UC Davis jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. After Burnham singled and Braydon Wooldridge walked, Wright brought them both home with a two-RBI double to right-center. Zach Story followed immediately with an RBI single down the right-field line to score Wright.
- Cal Poly got on the board in the bottom of the second when Gavin Spiridonoff hit an RBI triple to left-center, cutting the Aggies' lead to 3-1.
- The Mustangs trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single to left field by Cam Hoiland.
- In the top of the fifth, Tyler Howard launched a solo home run to left field, extending the UC Davis lead to 4-2.
- Cal Poly orchestrated a decisive three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Xander McLaurin ripped an RBI double down the left-field line to score Spiridonoff. In the very next at-bat, Alejandro Garza hit a go-ahead two-run homer to left field, giving the Mustangs a 5-4 advantage they would not relinquish.
