The short story: Using a gritty complete game performance from
Caroline Grimes, UC Davis softball battled to a close but well-earned victory over Sacred Heart in the final game of the Capital Classic, ending its Sunday with a pair of victories to cap off the weekend.
Â
LEADING OFF
- Grimes was tough as nails all game, giving up just one run in what was her fifth complete game of the season, while adding seven strikeouts and just one walk
- Gia Felice, Keira Brady, Marley Panziera and Syndey Polli all provided hits at the plate
- Felice had two stolen bases, while Alyssa Dethlefson and Naomi Kalanetra each added one as wellÂ
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sacred Heart got the first inning off to a fast start and would eventually load the bases with two outs, but Grimes dug deep and with a roar struck out Katerine Burras to end the frame and leave the bases full of Pioneers
- In the third, Sacred Heart would get on the board scoring on a sacrifice fly, but it was the only time that Grimes would let a run cross the plate throughout the game
- The Pioneers did get close in the fourth, but with two outs and a single hit to right, Teagan Dwyer tried to score from second, but a near frozen rope from Dethlefson in right cooked Dwyer at home and kept it at 1-0
- Polli singled home Brady in the bottom of the fourth to tie things up, as the Aggies built off the momentum Dethlefson's throw from right created in the top half of the frame
- Grimes sat down the Pioneers one-two-three in the top half of the fifth to set the stage for another Aggie run
- After reaching and working her way around the bases, Dethlefson was brought home on a Brady sacrifice fly to left field, putting the Aggies in front for good 2-1
- In the seventh, Grimes went to work wrapping up the Aggie win and with two outs and two runners on Grimes was locked in
- And on the first pitch to Charlene Davis, Grimes got the Pioneer batter to pop straight up to second base and as Rylee Reeves closed her glove the Aggies closed the book on the second win of the dayÂ
