The short story:
Behind six shutout innings from Ashley Sawai, UC Davis softball opened the its final day at the Capital Classic by knocking off future Mountain West counterpart San Jose State in a noon showdown in Davis.

LEADING OFF
  • Sawai gave up just five hits, allowing no walks and no runs in her six shut down frames of work
  • Maia Scholtens wrapped things up with a clean frame, allowing just one base runner
  • Alyssa Dethlefson led off once again, setting the pace going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one stolen base
  • Gia Felice was a solid 2-for-2, with one RBI and one double
  • Marley Panziera provided power for the Aggies, smashing a triple while knocking in a run
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Aggies did not take long to jump ahead of San Jose State early, and after Sawai sat down the Spartans in order the stage was set
  • Dethlefson led off with a single and after being sacrificed over to second she awaited her chance to round home
  • That chance came with two outs and Panziera at the dish, and after seeing a pair of pitches the Aggie shortstop smashed a triple down the right line that scored Panziera and put the Aggies up 1-0 right from the start
  • In the second Kayla Macias brought home Sydney Polli with a 2-out single to make it 2-0 two innings into the game
  • After yet another 1-2-3 frame manufactured by Sawai, the Aggies added another run in the bottom half of the third when Dethlefson (single; stolen base; moved over) was brought home on a Keira Brady sacrifice fly to make it 3-0
  • One more in the fifth came when Felice doubled home Macias from second base to make it 4-0
  • For Sawai the Aggie offense did more than enough as the UC Davis hurler was nearly unhittable and in her final inning of work, she once again sat down the Spartans in order
  • And after Scholtens finished off the seventh, the Aggies had earned a 4-0 win to open their Sunday
