The short story: Seven runs over the first two innings, along with lights out starting pitching from
Caroline Grimes powered UC Davis to a five-inning run rule victory over San Diego in the day's first game of two at the NorCal Kickoff's third day.
Â
LEADING OFF
- Grimes made the start, going three innings giving up just one run while striking out three
- Maia Scholtens, making her collegiate debut, earned a two-inning save putting up zeros across the stat line while allowing just one base runner
- Keira Brady had a big game at the dish, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored
- Marley Panziera, Rylee Reeves and Kaylin Phillips all had two hit days to power the Aggie offenseÂ
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With two outs in the first, and Brady on first the Aggies got the scoring start early with a show of power from Panziera when the UC Davis shortstop charged a triple to right field that brought home Brady and put that Aggies up 1-0
- In the second, UC Davis opened things up, scoring six runs over and inning that saw San Diego use three pitchers
- Reeves and Phillips led off with back-to-back singles to get things going, with both eventually coming around to score to make it 3-0
- But it was after the Aggies had two outs that the damage was truly done with Brady, Panziera and Naomi Kalanetra smacking three-straight singles that led to four more runs making it 7-0 after just two innings
- While San Diego would score one run off Grimes in the third, the Aggies were still in position entering the bottom of the fifth to walk things off
- Dethlefson led off with a base on balls and after being moved around to third, scored the run that triggered the run rule on a passed ball, securing the Aggie 9-1 victory
