The short story: Ellena Ediss provided five innings of strong relief in her collegiate debut, striking out four batters, but an early offensive output from Sacramento State would cost UC Davis softball its season opener on a beautiful afternoon at La Rue Field.
Â
LEADING OFF
- Ediss relieved starter Ashley Sawai, going five innings, with four strikeouts and only one walk
- Alyssa Dethlefson scored a run, recorded a hit and stole a base in her season opening performance
- Marley Panziera stole her first base of the season, while Rylee Reeves recorded the first hit by an Aggie this seasonÂ
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Using a pair of home runs in the first inning, Sacramento State opened an early 4-0 lead after two innings
- Ediss would take the circle and calm things down, keeping the Hornets off the board again until the fifth and sixth innings
- In the sixth, Dethlefson led off with a single, and after stealing a base she advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher
- Dethlefson would eventually cross the plate on a Naomi Kalanetra RBI ground out, giving the Aggies their first run of the season
- But it would be too little too late for the Aggies as the Hornets would shortly thereafter secure the 8-1 season opening win
