The short story: UC Davis outlasted Long Beach State in a 15-inning marathon, securing a 1-0 victory behind
Nick Leehey's solo home run and a masterclass pitching performance from three Aggies hurlers:
Bryan Green,
Mason Lerma and
Carter Delaney.
FIRST PITCH
- Delaney earned the win with five scoreless relief innings, allowing one hit and striking out three
- Green dominated early, tossing seven shutout frames with six hits allowed and five strikeouts
- Lerma went three innings, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts
- Leehey broke the deadlock with a 15th-inning leadoff blast—his team-leading fourth home run of the season
- UC Davis pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and stranded 14 Beach baserunners
- The Aggies' defense turned three double plays on the night
- Long Beach State went 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position
- Kyle Ashworth and Matt Toomey led the Beach with three hits each, while Kellan Montgomery and Albert Roblez anchored the pitching staff
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Green and Montgomery, the game's starters respectively, dueled through seven innings, combining for 10 strikeouts
- Both Lerma and Roblez continued the pace that Green and Montgomery set, putting up scoreless innings in relief, with Roblez notably escaping a bases-loaded jam in the ninth
- Despite not bringing any across during that ninth inning, UC Davis would eventually cash in during the 15th inning, with Leehey launching a 2-2 pitch from Roblez over the left-field wall—the game's only run
- Delaney, who took over for Lerma in the 11th, closed the marathon in the 15th inning
- After allowing a leadoff single to Kyle Ashworth and later intentionally walking Connor Charpiot, he induced a game-ending fielder's choice groundout from pinch-hitter Luke Taylor, stranding two runners to secure his first win of the season
