The short story: Despite a first-career home run from
Korey Williams and a vintage seven-inning performance from senior left-hander
Bryan Green in his final collegiate start, UC Davis couldn't hold off CSUN's late rally in a 3-2 loss Thursday at Dobbins Stadium.
Â
FIRST PITCH
- Green was sharp in his last start, allowing just three runs over seven innings with three strikeouts
- Mason Lerma provided two scoreless innings of relief, giving UC Davis a fighting chance late by keeping his team within one run
- The Aggies got an early two-run homer from Williams who launched a hanging breaking ball over the left field fence
- Williams' second-inning blast (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) accounted for all of UC Davis' offense, while Nick Leehey scored the Aggies' other run after reaching base ahead of Williams' homer
- For CSUN it was Xavier Rios, going 2-for-3 with the game-tying RBI, while freshman Max Mendes earned the win with seven solid innings
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the second inning, Williams crushed his first career home run over the left-field wall, scoring Leehey for an early 2-0 Aggie lead
- CSUN chipped away with a blast of their own off the bat of Rios who hit a solo shot, in the fifth
- Rios came through again with the game-tying run in the sixth with a single through the left side to make it 2-2
- In the seventh, the Matadors took the lead on two-out triple to left center from Sacramento native Will Linberg
- UC Davis got the tying run on base in the ninth after Leehey singled up the middle with two outs, but a game ending 5-4-3 double play capped off the 3-2 win for the visitors
UP NEXT: The Aggies will look to even the series when they host CSUN in Friday's 6 p.m. matchup at Dobbins Stadium.
