The short story: Tempers flared Saturday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, but this time it was UC Santa Barbara delivering the shutout with a 5-0 victory, flipping the script after UC Davis' dominant performance the night before.
Â
FIRST PITCH
- Making his fifth-career start, Ned Frutchey finished the game throwing 2.2 innings, allowing four runs
- A rare equipment dispute however was the big story today, with play being halted in the third inning when it was discovered non-conference baseballs (missing Big West logos) were being used by the Gauchos, causing both dugouts to exchange heated words before the umpires restored order
- Even through the delay of play, the Aggie bullpen showed promise, with Noel Valdez going nine straight batters without allowing a hit at one point and Max Hippensteel striking out two in a perfect eighth
- Braydon Wooldridge and Mark Wolbert each extended their hitting-streaks to four games, as Wooldridge finished the game going 2-for-3 with a double and Wolbert at 1-for-2 with a pair of walks
- For the Gauchos, starter Calvin Proskey delivered 7.0 shutout innings and 11 strikeouts
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Aggies threatened early with a Wooldridge first-inning single, and a Wolbert walk but Proskey escaped with a strikeout
- UC Santa Barbara broke through in the second inning with two straight run-scoring hits, including a Reiss Calvin RBI double to left center, and a Rowan Kelly single through the left side to make it 2-0
- The turning point came in the third when Nate Vargas' two-run double stretched the lead to 4-0
- UC Davis' best chance came in the eighth when they loaded the bases, but a clutch double play from the Gaucho defense ended the threat
- UC Santa Barbara got their final run of the game in the sixth with a two-out double to right center from LeTrey McCollum scoring Xavier Esquer from second
UP NEXT: UC Davis will have a chance to take the series over the Gauchos tomorrow with the finale against UC Santa Barbara scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
