The short story: Big West Preseason All-Conference selection Bryan Green continued his career-long success against UC Santa Barbara, tossing 8.0 shutout innings with six strikeouts as he and Mason Lerma combined to blank the Gauchos in Friday night's series opener at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

FIRST PITCH
  • The victory snapped UC Davis' 17-game losing streak against UC Santa Barbara, dating back to 2018
  • Green dominated across eight scoreless frames, scattering five hits, walking three, and striking out six
  • The outing extended his strong track record against UC Santa Barbara where last season, he threw 7.1 innings with nine strikeouts and just one earned run allowed
  • The 8.0-inning performance marked a career high for the left-hander
  • Lerma sealed the win in the ninth, earning his first save of the season with a pair of strikeouts
  • The Aggie defense backed Green and Lerma all night, highlighted by Tyler Howard's pair of sliding catches in right field
  • Nick Leehey's RBI single in the second inning proved to be the difference, driving in Mark Wolbert after the center fielder singled and advanced on a groundout
  • Leehey now has 16 RBIs this season, trailing only Braydon Wooldridge for the team lead
  • For the Gauchos, Rowan Kelly went 2-for-2 at the plate, while starter Tyler Bremner delivered seven strong innings, allowing just one run

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bremner set an early tone for the game, striking out the Aggies' top three hitters in order in the first
  • UC Davis would show some fight by breaking through in the second when Leehey lined an RBI single to score Wolbert, who had reached on a single and moved to second on Alex Gouveia's groundout
  • Green found his rhythm as the game progressed, recording at least one strikeout in each of the first four innings
  • The Gauchos threatened in the fifth after a leadoff single
  • This leadoff runner for the Gauchos made his way to third with only one out in the frame but Green escaped unscathed, aided by Ryan Lee's backhanded stab at third to nearly turn a double play, followed by a lineout
  • The Aggies nearly extended their lead in the eighth, putting runners on first and second with one out after singles from Howard and Wooldridge
  • But UC Santa Barbara came through with some a strong defensive play of their own, a double play after a pitching change to keep the deficit at one
  • Lerma entered in the ninth, allowing a leadoff single before locking it down with a strikeout, a flyout, and another strikeout to secure the combined shutout

UP NEXT: UC Davis looks to clinch the series Saturday at 3:05 p.m.
