The short story: After falling in a 12-inning heartbreaker, which saw UC Davis softball mount a late comeback to force extras, the Aggies lost their second game of the day to drop Friday night's Big West doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton.
Â
LEADING OFF
- The 12-inning game was the longest the Aggies have played since going 13 frames against Pacific in 2021. It's also the longest Big West game since going 12 innings against Long Beach State in 2018
- Caroline Grimes pitched an absolute gem in the opening game, throwing 11.2 (the most by an Aggie since 2018), striking out seven while giving up just two walks and three earned runs
- Keira Brady had a two RBI day, recording two hits and one double
- Rylee Reeves had a pair of hits, one RBI and walked twice
- Kayla Macias strung together a pair of hits, walking twice and scoring a run
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
- Cal State Fullerton scored a pair of runs in the third and one in the fourth to build out a 3-1 lead after five innings
- With time running out, the Aggies got things going when Marley Panziera singled to right field to open the top of the sixth
- Macias walked to put a pair of Aggies on
- With one out, Brady stepped into the box and after taking a strike smashed a double to right center that scored both Aggies to tie things up at 3-3
- Grimes was lights out as things rolled into extras, and even late still getting it done when she sat down the Fullerton batters in order in the bottom of the 11th
- But, without any Aggie runs being pushed across despite the final five leadoff off hitters getting on board, Cal State Fullerton would eventually walk it off in the 12th an a two-out double to right center to put the final score in game one at 4-3
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO)
- Cal State Fullerton scored all 11 of its runs in the first inning, knocking out Sawai in the that frame allowing for Alyssa Dethlefson to take over
- Dethlefson would go on to strike three while not giving up any runs after the first inning
- But the 11-0 hole the Aggies opening the game in would be too much to overcome in the game two loss
UP NEXT FOR THE AGGIES: UC Davis wraps up its Big West weekend series at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, April 19 with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
