The short story: UC Davis softball dropped a pair of closely contested Big West games against Long Beach State to open its conference weekend series at La Rue Field.

LEADING OFF
  • Caroline Grimes allowed just one earned run over 6.1 innings pitched, leading the Aggies with four strike outs
  • Ashley Sawai threw a complete game, giving up two earned runs while holding Long Beach State to .222 over seven innings
  • Kayla Macias led the Aggies at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and she fielded a perfect 1.000 with two putouts and two assists
  • Gia Felice provided the power, hitting a triple while going 2-for-6 with one run scored
  • Mickey Buscemi and Naomi Kalanetra each had a double in the games, with each having an RBI
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
  • Long Beach State opened the scoring with a solo home run to left center in the first inning, but it would take until the seventh inning until Grimes would give up another run
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Buscemi tied the game with an RBI single to left center field that scored Sophia Eftekhari, making it 1-1
  • But in the seventh, the Aggie defense would commit two errors early in the frame that eventually allowed for Long Beach State to plate six unearned runs in the frame to pull away with a 7-1 lead
  • Kalanetra, pinch hitting for Felice, got one more on the board for the Aggies when her bottom of the seventh two out double scored Bri Weekes, but in the end Long Beach State had locked up its 7-2 first game win
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO)
  • Sawai tossed three shutout innings to open the game, and entering the fourth inning it was scoreless
  • In the fourth, a Long Beach State two run home run got them on the board making it 2-0, but Sawai locked back in over the remainder of the game
  • The Aggies responded in the bottom of the fourth when Felice smashed a one out triple to right field
  • Macias followed her fellow infielder with a single to right field that scored Felice and brought the Aggies within one run at 2-1
  • Long Beach State tacked one more run on in the top half of the seventh, making it a hill the Aggies could not climb as they fell 3-1
