No. 8 UC Davis Football Punches Ticket To FCS Quarters For Second Straight Season

Score:  No. 8 UC Davis 47, No. 9 Rhode Island 26
Location: Davis, Calif. (UC Davis Health Stadium)
Records: UC Davis 9-3, Rhode Island 11-3

The short story:
No. 8 UC Davis football exploded offensively in the second half, outscoring No. 9 Rhode Island 29-6 in the final 30 minutes to pull away for an exciting win in tonight's NCAA Football Championship Series Second Round Playoff match up to punch its ticket to the quarterfinals for the second-straight season.

UC Davis will now host, for a second-straight season, Illinois State on Saturday, Dec. 13 with that game set for a 2 p.m. kick on ESPN+. It's the first time the Aggies will host an FCS Quarterfinals playoff game and the first hosting of a quarterfinal game since 2001.

FIRST DOWN
  • Caden Pinnick had himself a day, leading the Aggies with 277 passing yards, adding five passing touchdowns and 99 yards on the ground for a total of 376 all-purpose yards
  • Samuel Gbatu Jr., eclipsed 1,000 yards receiving on the season finishing with 121 receiving yards on four catches adding one touchdown
  • Jordan Fisher broke 1,000 yards on the ground for the season, finishing with 140 yards on the ground, on 16 touches adding one touchdown on the ground
  • As a team the Aggies totaled 553 yards of offense, collecting 277 through the air and 276 on the ground
  • Nate Rutchena made eight stops, leading the Aggies with six solo tackles and one fumble recovery
WHAT HEAD COACH TIM PLOUGH HAD TO SAY:
"We are thrilled about the results tonight. We talked all week about how we wanted to win so that we could spend another week together. I love this team so much and love coaching them, so it was tough to bear the thought of not having another week with these guys. I'm proud of these guys for working hard and getting it down tonight against a fantastic Rhode Island team, as they all are at this point of the season. I'd also like to thank the donors and alumni for donating money to cover the costs for our student tickets. To have 2,500 students show up to the game was amazing. And to think about where we were a year ago as compared to tonight with our crowd it shows the growth of our program. It's a great night to be an Aggie."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • UC Davis got things started quickly, going 12 plays on the opening drive for 50 yards, settling with a Hunter Ridley 37-yard field goal to get the Ags on the board in the opening 10 minutes
  • Both teams would trade possessions throughout the remainder of the quarter, with Pinnick unfortunately throwing an interception in the red zone to end an Aggie drive
  • Rhode Island got on the board in their opening drive of the second quarter, capping off a nine-play 80-yard drive with a two-yard rush to make it 7-3
  • The response from UC Davis was quick, and on the next drive Pinnick opened things by hitting Gbatu Jr., for 67 yards to put the Aggies deep into Rhody territory
  • Three plays later the Ags punched it in when Pinnick found Scott Nixon from three yards out. Ian Simpson then quickly took a direct snap to convert a two-point conversion to put UC Davis back in from 11-7
  • On Rhode Island's second play of its next drive, Antwain Littleton, Jr., exploded off right tackle for 63 yards and a touchdown to put Rhode Island back in front 14-11
  • After the Aggies failed to score on the next drive Rhode Island went six plays, 86 yards with the big strike coming on a 75-yard touchdown pass to push Rhode Island back in front, it was Rhody's last time retaking the lead in the game
  • With 2:14 on the clock UC Davis started its next drive and began to quickly march down the field, getting big plays from Pinnick on the ground and Stacy Dobbins through the air to set things up for the Aggies
  • Sitting just inside the 20, Pinnick hit a streaking Zach Jones for another Aggie score and it meant going into break the Aggies had the momentum and sat just two points behind at 20-18
  • Rhode Island's lead did not last long into the second half, and after going three-and-out in its opening drive UC Davis blasted into the lead
  • The go-ahead score came on the ground when Fisher exploded up the middle for 50 yards and a score, putting it at 25-20 giving the Aggies a lead they would not give back
  • As the quarter continued to progress the true momentum changer came on Rhode Island's third drive when on its second play Jackson Sievers used a textbook punch-out to put the ball on the ground for Rutchena to scoop and set the Aggies up at the 17-yard line
  • On just the second play of the next drive, Pinnick found Simpson in the endzone for a nine-yard pitch and catch that extended the Aggie lead to 33-20 and gave them some points off turnovers
  • UC Davis capped off a drive started in the third quarter early in the fourth when Pinnick hit Gbatu Jr., from 27 yards out to make it 40-20 with the entire fourth quarter left to play out
  • Pinnick would later in the quarter lead a final scoring drive, going five quick plays for 76 yards ending things with a tremendous throw over the defender and to a floating Jones from 35 yards out to make it 47-20
  • Rhode Island would score one final time before the final whistle, but after Gbatu Jr., recovered the onside kick attempt the Aggies kneeled out the second round victory and clinched their spot in the quarterfinals for a second-straight season
GAME NOTES
  • Saturday will mark the first time the Aggies have hosted a quarterfinal game since 2001 and the first since making the move into the ranks of the FCS
  • This was the first win over Rhode Island in the first meeting historically between the two programs
  • This marks the first time the Aggies have made back-to-back NCAA playoff quarterfinal appearances since reaching that round in the Division II playoffs in 2001 and 2002
  • UC Davis has now won its last four home playoff games dating back to 2001
  • Gbatu Jr., becomes the first Aggie to reach 1,000 yards receiving in a single season since Keelan Doss in 2018 and he becomes just the seventh Aggie to ever reach the single season 1,000 mark
  • Gbatu Jr., recorded his seventh 100-yard receiving game of the season and the ninth of his career
  • Fisher broke 1,000 yards rushing on the season, giving the Aggies 1,000-yard rushers in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1997-98
  • Finishing with over 100 yards, Fisher has now reached the century mark six times this year
  • For only the fourth time in program history, and first since 2002, the Aggies can claim a 1,000-yard rusher and 1,000-yard receiver in the same season
  • Pinnick became the first quarterback in program history to throw for five touchdowns in a single game twice in a single season
  • The five touchdowns thrown ties for the second-most in a postseason game by an Aggie quarterback, matched by the only other quarterback to do it when Kevin Daft threw for five touchdowns in the Aggie's 1997 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville
  • Dixon's touchdown was the first of his career
