THE SHORT STORY: UC Davis battled throughout its final home match of the season but came up short in a 1-0 loss to Hawai'i on Thursday night. The Rainbow Wahine struck early in the first half and held off multiple Aggie chances, including a near equalizer off the crossbar, to secure the Big West win.
PITCH SIDE
- Genavieve Fontes recorded two shots, including one on goal, to pace the UC Davis attack
- Karla Sandoval and Summer Humphreys each tallied a shot on goal, while Sydney Bushman nearly leveled the match with a strike off the woodwork in the 30th minute
- Goalkeeper Cat Pieper registered fours saves, all within the second half to keep the Aggies within striking distance through the match
- UC Davis outshot Hawai'i 5-4 in the second half and earned multiple set-piece chances down the stretch
- The Aggies finished with nine shots, four of them on goal
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hawai'i opened the scoring in the 9th minute as Nalani Damacion finished from close range off an Amber Gilbert assist
- UC Davis nearly answered when Fontes and Sandoval each forced saves from goalkeeper Kennedy Justin midway through the half
- Bushman clipped the crossbar in the 30th minute off a free kick, narrowly missing the equalizer
- The Aggies maintained pressure early in the second half, with Bailey Rakela and Humphreys testing the Hawai'i keeper
- Pieper made key saves in the 57th and 86th minutes to keep it 1-0
- Along with Pieper's saves, the UC Davis backline came through with a huge save in the 72nd minute, denying a shot from Solala Nasu that nearly found the back of the net
- Despite several late opportunities, UC Davis was unable to convert as Hawai'i held on for the win
