THE SHORT STORY: UC Davis battled on the road at UC Irvine but came up short in a 2-0 defeat Thursday night. The Aggies held the Anteaters to one first-half goal, late in 38th minute, before conceding another midway through the second half.
PITCH SIDE
- Goalkeeper Cat Pieper played all 90 minutes, recording three saves on 14 shots faced
- McKayla Farrell put the Aggies' lone shot on target in the 42nd minute
- Charlotte Henness and Savannah Cordero each added one shot late, with Cordero's chance coming in the final minute of regulation
- Kylee Redman generated a late opportunity in the 89th minute that was blocked
- UC Davis earned two corners in the closing minutes while pressing to break through offensively
- The Aggies were shown two yellow cards, to Sarah Canavan (12') and Livi Lewis (83')
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Aggies absorbed early pressure and defended strong in the first half
- UC Davis however fell behind in the 37th minute, when Suus de Bakker finished off a service from Chifumi Sasaki to put Irvine ahead 1-0
- UC Davis nearly answered before the half, as Farrell forced a save from Anteaters goalkeeper Laurynn Ziller, and Henness missed just wide in the 45th minute
- Irvine doubled its lead in the 67th minute when de Bakker struck again, this time finishing a feed from Clara Samson on the left wing to make it 2-0
- UC Davis battled back with two late corners, including shots by Redman and Cordero in the 89th, but could not cut into the deficit as Irvine secured the shutout
