Football Holds First Scrimmage On Day 10 Of Fall Camp

DAVIS, Calif. – Things sure sounded and looked a lot like football at UC Davis Health Stadium as No. 18 UC Davis football celebrated the 10th day of fall camp by hosting a scrimmage as the Aggies continue to ratchet up to the Aug. 31 season opener.

"Today was our first opportunity to get out and play a scrimmage," said head coach Tim Plough. "There were a lot of positives today, including the defense tackling well and the offense creating explosive plays. I think our team is growing and I like where we're at right now, but we are not where we want to be by any means. So, we will continue to have a good trajectory through the remainder of camp."

The Aggies, who open 2024 at California, took the field and immediately got to work running different game situations, while having officials on the field calling the game as they would on Saturdays. UC Davis also took the chance to run special teams at full speed, as those units begin to solidify themselves through the midway point of camp.

"Thankful for the officials that came out on a hot day to help us out," said Plough. "When things like holding and pass interference start to get called, things start to become real for the guys. It's a great learning opportunity for our guys to really feel like it's a game."

Davis also took the opportunity of the scrimmage to break out a new piece of technology that is available to them, that being the usage of iPads on the sideline for instant review of plays and breakdowns. Much like how things are run in the National Football League, the Aggie coaches can now give the players immediate feedback as the game evolves on each Saturday.

"We got the chance to try out the iPads, and it was good to get a dry run operating those so that we can adjust as we grow with the new tech in college football," said Plough.

As the final pieces of install come into place over the next week, UC Davis sits in a good spot as the top-20 Aggies continue to build each day towards the 2024 season.
