2024 Officially Opens For Business As Aggies Begin Fall Camp

DAVIS, Calif. – The 2024 campaign for UC Davis football and first-year head coach Tim Plough officially began on July 31 when the Aggies opened fall camp with the first of 25 practices leading into the season opener on Aug. 31.

The Aggies took to Bob Biggs Practice Field on a warm morning and immediately it sounded like football behind the Edwards Family Athletics Center. Wearing just helmets and soft tops, the Aggies worked through individual drills and spent time getting to know pre-snap situations on both sides of the ball.

"For these first couple of days, what we're really focusing on is the pre-snap reads," said Plough. "We try to win the warfare before the ball is even snapped. That's what great teams do, whether it's offensively with your tempo or your shifts in motions. Or defensively with stemming fronts, hiding coverages and bringing pressures. So over these first couple of days winning the warfare pre-snap is a big focus for us."

For a lot of the Aggies it was the first time the officially practiced together, but for most as UC Davis has a deep returning roster, it was if things never changed.

"It felt good to get out there and get running around and seeing everybody ready to go," said senior running back and 2024 Walter Payton Preseason Watch List honoree Lan Larison. "We as a team have high standards and want to win the Big Sky and we also want to make a good run in the playoffs. Everybody was pumped to play some football today and we all can't wait to continue working towards our goals."

The Aggies finished 2023 7-4 and were one of the last teams in the nation left out of the NCAA Football Championship Series National Championships. With the beginning of camp UC Davis is focused on getting over the hump this season and making a run at Frisco, Texas.

"It's been a while for some of our guys on the team to put on pads, so it was fun to see them out there running around," said junior defensive back and 2024 Buck Buchanan Watch List honoree Rex Connors. "I'm excited and I know the team is to be able to have the opportunities we have this year as we work towards a Big Sky Championship and hopefully later a shot at a National Championship."

UC Davis opens the season at Cal on Aug. 31, with kick set for 2 p.m. The Aggies open UC Davis Health Stadium on Sept. 7 with a 7 p.m. kickoff against Texas A&M-Commerce.
