The short story: After three separate delays during the day in response to the rain, UC Davis' comeback efforts Saturday came up just short, as Long Beach State evened the series at one a piece despite a 2-for-3 day from
Ethan Felix.
LEADING OFF
- Felix's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-3 day, and included a double, a home run and an RBI
- UC Davis scored in pairs throughout, scoring two runs on three different occasions: the fourth, the sixth and the ninth
- Carter Speights was the most impressive arm for the Aggies, going two shutout innings in relief
- Riley Acosta compiled a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two RBI
- Nick Leehey also helped out for the Aggies, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI
- Long Beach State's John Newman Jr. went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI
- Nathen Morris led the Beach pitching staff, throwing 1.1 shutout innings
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 6-0, after a six-run, six-hit inning for the Dirtbags, the Aggies first put runs on the board in the fourth
- UC Davis responded immediately, and plated two runs with back-to-back hits from Acosta and Leehey
- The Aggies kept the Dirtbags off the board before narrowing the gap further in the sixth
- UC Davis picked up two runs, including an opposite field homer off the bat of Felix, which brought the score to 6-4 in favor of the Dirtbags
- Long Beach State expanded their lead to 9-4, making the Aggies pay on a pair of errors, and these insurance runs proved vital
- UC Davis' offense got going, reducing that lead to 9-6 in the ninth but the comeback effort came short, with the runs in the prior inning, helping play a deciding factor
