The short story: After being shutout for eight straight innings, the UC Davis Aggies rallied to score seven in the ninth inning, walking it off on
Mark Wolbert's two-run home run to pick up the 7-6 victory over the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners Thursday.
LEADING OFF
- In the batter's box, the Aggies were paced by Wolbert, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI
- The Aggies recorded six of their eight hits in the ninth inning alone
- Jack Gallagher delivered a rally sparking double in his pinch-hit appearance in the ninth
- On the hill, Mason Lerma came through with his best performance of his young career, holding it down for 7.0 innings, picking up the win in relief
- The Roadrunners were fueled by freshman Cooper Gerecke, who went 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cal State Bakersfield jumped ahead early, scoring three runs with the help from four straight hits to begin the game
- It would remain 3-0 in favor of the Roadrunners till the fourth, with UC Davis committing two errors helping give Cal State Bakersfield another pair of runs
- The 5-0 lead would extend to 6-0 in the ninth after Gerecke's homer at the start of the top half of the inning
- Everything would change late with the Aggies rallying back to score seven runs to the tune of six hits
- The inning saw three separate Aggies who entered the game in the later innings come up with key hits as Nick Iverson, Jack Gallagher and Theo Forshey helped keep the line moving
- Wolbert would have the final say, slamming his third home run of the season to lift UC Davis and steal game one of the series
