The short story: A pair of solo home runs along with a lockdown pitching effort helped UC Davis edge out the host Sacramento State Hornets and secure the programs first season sweep over their Causeway rival since the 2016 season.
LEADING OFF
- Ethan Felix made his return to the starting lineup and did so with authority, going 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a double
- Ryan Lee joined in on the action, also blasting a solo home run and collecting a double as he finished the ballgame going 2-for-4
- On the hill, the Aggies used a total of nine pitchers, to limit the Hornets to just two runs
- The Aggie staff tallied 11 strikeouts combined, and limited the Hornets to an 0-for-10 showing with runners in scoring position
- Kaden Hogan earned the win for UC Davis, while starter Sal Batres impressed, tossing 2.0 innings of hitless baseball, as he struck out two Hornets
- Sacramento State was led offensively by Jacob Cortez, who went 2-for-3 with a double
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Aggies got on the scoreboard in the third inning as Felix put launched a one-out solo home run off freshman Bryce Stockton
- The Hornets then rallied to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead before the Aggies got back on the board in the seventh
- UC Davis picked up a run on Lee's leadoff home run off of senior Jasper Nelson, which brought the score level at 2-2
- That 2-2 tie turned into a 3-2 UC Davis lead in the eighth with Braydon Wooldridge bringing home Damian Stone on a fielders choice
- The score remained 3-2 for the rest of the game, as UC Davis held on for the win thanks to a web gem from Mark Wolbert with two outs to erase any hopes of a comeback
NOTABLE
- Felix collected home runs in both of the road games this season against Sacramento State
- The Aggies earned the sweep over the Hornets for the first time since 2016
