From Field Hockey Athlete to Veterinary Medicine Professional: A Journey of Growth and Giving Back

DAVIS, Calif. — In the world of college athletics, success extends far beyond the playing field. It's about nurturing the holistic development of student-athletes and preparing them for life after graduation. At UC Davis, the Aggie EVO program stands as a testament to this commitment. Kelley Kramer, a former UC Davis field hockey athlete turned veterinary medicine student, embodies the spirit of EVO as she mentors current players like first-year Hannah Dunfee, guiding them through the transitions and challenges of academic and athletic pursuits.

Kelley's journey began with a simple choice: Why Davis? For her, it was more than just a prestigious animal science program; it was the sense of community and family within the field hockey team that drew her in. Reflecting on her decision, Kelley recalls meeting players who shared her Southern California roots and spoke highly of the Davis experience. Little did she know, this decision would shape her path towards a career in veterinary medicine.

As a student-athlete, Kelley navigated the rigorous demands of Division I athletics while pursuing her academic passions. Initially majoring in psychology, she found her calling in animal science during her second year. Inspired by the vibrant presence of livestock and research opportunities at UC Davis, Kelley set her sights on veterinary school.

She pursued a master's degree in biology, conducting research at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. It was during this time that Kelley's dedication and perseverance shone through, eventually leading to her acceptance into UC Davis' prestigious Vet Med School. Reflecting on this challenging period, Kelley acknowledges the invaluable lessons she learned as a student-athlete, particularly in managing stress and cultivating a strong work ethic.

Her engagement with the Aggie EVO program was central to Kelley's evolution from student-athlete to professional. Through EVO, she gained insights from alumni transitioning into diverse and fulfilling careers. These stories of success resonated deeply with Kelley, affirming that student-athletes could thrive beyond the confines of their sport. EVO also equipped her with essential tools for career development, from crafting resumes to networking effectively.

Beyond her journey, Kelley is committed to paying it forward. Recognizing the importance of mentorship, she readily offers guidance to current student-athletes like Hannah Dunfee, who aspire to follow in her footsteps. Drawing from her own experiences navigating the vet school application process, Kelley provides invaluable support and encouragement to those embarking on similar paths.

"All of my interactions with the alumni have been so positive, especially my meeting with Kelley Kramer, where she made time to share her experiences as a student-athlete and how she managed to balance majoring in Animal Science at Davis. She was so helpful and encouraging and has been such a great figure I can look up to and rely on," reflects Hannah Dunfee, echoing the sentiments of many current student-athletes benefiting from the guidance of former Aggie players like Kelley.

In Kelley, Hannah found not only a mentor but also a source of inspiration, someone who exemplifies the values of resilience and determination instilled by the Aggie EVO program. Kelley's willingness to share her journey from field hockey athlete to veterinary medicine student resonates deeply with Hannah, reinforcing the belief that success is attainable through dedication and support. As Hannah navigates her path, she carries with her the invaluable lessons and encouragement imparted by Kelley.

Mike Lorenzen, the Associate Athletics Director for Leadership and Professional Development, emphasizes the significance of alumni like Kelley giving back to the program: "EVO has been in place long enough now that we're starting to see the full circle of student-athletes who have launched into their career paths and benefitted by giving back to current student-athletes." Kelley's mentorship exemplifies this ethos, bridging the gap between past and present, and empowering the next generation of Aggie student-athletes. Mike continues, "
The connection between Kelley and Hannah is a great example that our focus on intentionally developing Aggies through sports and preparing for life after graduation while competing for championships is both the right thing to do and a unique competitive advantage for UC Davis."

As Kelley looks ahead, she remains deeply connected to her field hockey roots. Whether attending alumni games or supporting the team during Give Day, she continues to champion the program that played a pivotal role in her journey. For Kelley, being an Aggie extends far beyond her time on the field; it's about fostering a legacy of excellence and empowerment for generations to come.

In the bustling halls of UC Davis' veterinary teaching hospital, Kelley prepares to embark on the next chapter of her career. With clinics on the horizon and the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam looming, she approaches the challenges ahead with the same tenacity and resilience that defined her journey as a student-athlete. As she strides towards her goals, Kelley remains a testament to the transformative power of athletics, education, and mentorship. In her footsteps, a new generation of Aggie student-athletes will find inspiration and guidance, ensuring that the legacy of EVO continues to thrive as a beacon of excellence in Division I athletics.
