Aggies Rally from Behind to Complete Comeback; Sweep CSUN

The short story:  After trailing for five innings, UC Davis scored twice in the sixth to pull off an exciting comeback and complete the three-game sweep over CSUN.

LEADING OFF

  • Kenedi Brown made her third appearance of the weekend and picked up the victory out of the bullpen in her excellent relief outing. The right-hander went four shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing two walks and striking out four.
  • Ashley Sawai got the start in the circle for the third consecutive game for the Aggies. She tossed three innings, giving up one run on two hits, with one walk and one strikeout.
  • UC Davis pitchers faced 28 CSUN hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and 10 fly balls while striking out five.
  • Maddie Grissom came up with a clutch RBI-triple in the sixth inning.
  • Leah Polson, Sarah Nakahara, and Libbie McMahan all tallied a hit in the contest.
  • CSUN was led offensively by junior Sydney Freijanes, who went 1-for-2 with a home run.
  • Isabella Alonso led the Matadors pitching staff, throwing five scoreless innings.
 
THE RUNDOWN 
  • In the top of the first, CSUN put runners at second and third with two outs before Nakahara saved a couple runs with her incredible diving catch in left field.
  • Sydney Freijares gave the Matadors an early lead with a solo home run in the second.
  • UC Davis was no-hit for three frames before Leah Polson recorded the team's first hit to leadoff the home half of the fourth.
  • The Aggies loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth but were unable to find the big hit.
  • UC Davis came up with a huge rally in the bottom of the sixth inning when Nakahara set the table with her leadoff single to right.
  • Nakahara advanced to second on wild pitch and later scored on Maddie Grissom's game-tying triple in the right-center gap.
  • Gia Felice came on to pinch run and scored the winning run when she raced home on another wild pitch.
  • Brown did the rest, throwing up her fourth straight zero to clinch the 2-1 win for Davis' team.


BY THE NUMBERS
  • Brown and Sawai appeared in all three games.
  • The pitching duo allowed just three hits on the day.
  • This was the Aggies' second series sweep of the season. The last came on Feb. 23-25 when UC Davis swept California Baptist.

The Ags take on No. 7 Stanford on April 17. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at La Rue Field.
