The short story: UC Davis returned to form and clinched a Big West series win after sweeping the series-opening doubleheader against CSUN on Friday afternoon at La Rue Field. The Aggies received some solid pitching performances to control the first game of the day before exploding for a six-run third inning in game two to cruise to victory in the back half of the doubleheader.
LEADING OFF
- Anna Dethlefson banged out four hits, scored three runs, and swiped three bases to power the Aggies' offense.
- Leah Polson enjoyed an excellent day at the plate, going 3-for-6 with three RBI on the day.
- Bella Pahulu launched her first home run of the season and the sixth of her career.
- UC Davis took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of game one.
- Dethlefson stole three bases on Friday afternoon.
- In the first game, CSUN was led offensively by junior Kylie Galindo, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
- Ashley Sawai tossed a total of six innings, allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out two. The freshman also earned her fourth win of the season.
- Kenedi Brown picked up two saves after surrendering just two hits and one earned run in her sixth innings of work. The Elk Grove native struck out six hitters on the day.
- Kylie Galindo registered four hits over the two contests for the visitors.
THE RUNDOWN (GAME ONE)
- Dethlefson led off the home half of the first with a base hit. After swiping second base and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Polson brought the leadoff hitter around to score with a sacrifice fly.
- When the Aggies got back to the top of the order in the third inning, UC Davis used the same recipe to double its lead. Dethlefson led things off with a walk before Polson drove her in yet again, this time with a sharply-hit double in the left-center gap.
- CSUN answered in the fourth frame, pushing a run across to make the score 2-1.
- Marley Panziera came up with a two-out base hit to restore the Aggies' two-run advantage in the bottom of the fourth.
- Brown came on to relieve Sawai in the fifth and quickly struck out the side in her first inning of work.
- The right-hander fanned five CSUN hitters in her three scoreless innings hitters to pick up the save.
THE RUNDOWN (GAME TWO)
- The Aggies struck first when Pahulu blasted her first home run of the year, a solo shot over the left field wall, to give her team an early lead.
- The Matadors capitalized on a UC Davis error in the top of the third, scoring two unearned runs to snatch the lead.
- Dethlefson smacked a double off the left field wall to plate the tying run and Polson collected her third base hit and third RBI of the doubleheader when she roped a line drive off the glove of the CSUN third baseman.
- Nakahara kept the rally going when she lifted a fly ball over the centerfielder's head to extend the lead to 4-2.
- Grace Kilday knocked a base hit to left - scoring Nakahara – before Tatum Wentworth came up to the plate with the bases loaded in a pinch-hit opportunity and delivered another two-out hit to score two more, capping off a six-run third.
- CSUN got one run back in the fourth, another via a UC Davis defensive mishap.
- Grimes toed the rubber to start the third and completed two frames without allowing an earned run.
- Brown went the rest of the way to shut the door yet again, picking up her second save of the day and her fourth of the season after surrendering just one run over three innings in the circle.
