SANTA CLARA, Calif. — With a dominant display on the mound, junior Bryan Green struck out eight Santa Clara batters in 5.2 innings of work on Friday night. However, his efforts were in vain as the UC Davis Aggies suffered a 10-2 defeat to the Santa Clara Broncos.
Green (0-1) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing only three runs on six hits and one walk for UC Davis (7-6). Despite the loss, it was his best outing of the season, as he kept a potent offense that made the NCAA regionals last year at bay for most of the game.
In the batter's box, the Aggies were led by junior Riley Acosta, who went 1-for-1 on the day with a double and two walks. Acosta's last four hits have now all gone for doubles, with the junior from Redondo Beach now sharing a tie for the most extra-base hits among his Aggie teammates with Nick Leehey being the other on the team with six this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 3-0, the Aggies first put runs on the board in the seventh inning. UC Davis managed to push across two runs in the inning capitalizing on error in the inning. The Broncos then responded with two more runs to extend their lead to 5-2. The Aggies came up to the plate in the top of the eighth and were unable to keep the run train going. Instead, it was Santa Clara who added five runs to their tally in the bottom of the eighth on the way to a 10-2 final.
