The short story: The struggles at the plate continue for UC Davis who drops its fifth consecutive contest while Cal State Bakersfield snaps its 19-game losing streak and earns its first Big West victory of the season. The duo of Kirsten Martinez and Anisa Reynolds combined for the four-hit shutout, dominating in the circle from start-to-finish.

LEADING OFF

  • Kenedi Brown was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going three shutout innings while allowing two hits, walking none and striking out two.
  •  Sarah Nakahara led the Aggies at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a double.
  • Cal State Bakersfield was led offensively by Maya Molina-Villareal who went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI.
  • Kirsten Martinez led the Roadrunners pitching staff, throwing five shutout innings.
  • UC Davis was unable to find the timely hit in the shutout, going a total of 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. The Aggies last got a runner on third in the fourth, when Bella Pahulu made it 60 feet away from scoring with two outs.
  • UC Davis pitchers faced 29 Cal State Bakersfield hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and 11 fly balls while striking out three.
THE RUNDOWN
  • After the Roadrunners rallied for three straight hits in their first turn at the plate, Nakahara showed off her canon and nailed a runner tagging from third base for an inning-ending double play to escape a bases-loaded jam.
  •  Cal State Bakersfield struck first in the third inning, using some small ball to manufacture the first run of the ballgame without a base hit.
  • The visitors pushed two more runs across in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 3-0.
  • Brown came on to relieve Reineman in the fifth inning and tossed three scoreless frames to keep her team within striking distance.
  • The Aggies brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to mount a comeback.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Cal State Bakersfield came into today's contest with a 16-game losing streak in Big West games dating back to April 22, 2023.
  • This was UC Davis' first defeat to Cal State Bakersfield since 2016.
  • Pahulu drew two walks in the game.
  • Mickey Buscemi, who went 1-for-2 with a walk, was the only Aggie besides Pahulu to reach base multiple times.
