Aggies Sweep Doubleheader to Earn Series Victory Over Roadrunners

The short story: On a cold and rainy day in Davis, the Aggies stormed back from an early deficit to take the first game of the day before grabbing a comfortable victory in the back half of the doubleheader to earn the series win over Cal State Bakersfield.

LEADING OFF

  • All starters reached base in the game one win.
  • Sarah Reineman got the win out of the bullpen for UC Davis, throwing 2.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits.
  • Kenedi Brown earned the save in the first game of the day, pitching three perfect innings to preserve the Aggies' lead.
  • Anna Dethlefson racked up five hits and swiped two bases in the doubleheader, elevating her batting average above the .300 mark.
  • UC Davis broke the first game open with four runs in the second, rallying for six hits in the inning.
  • Marley Panziera blasted her second home run of the year to highlight her three-hit day at the plate.
  • UC Davis out-hit the Roadrunners 24-10 on the day.
  • In game two, UC Davis grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
  • The Aggies power output in the second half of the doubleheader was led by Panziera, who had two extra base hits in the ballgame.
  • Brown was excellent in the second game as the right-hander went the distance, giving up one run on four hits, allowing three walks and striking out seven. This was her fifth complete game of the season.
 
THE RUNDOWN (GAME ONE)
  • The visitors took an early lead, using two singles and a hit-by-pitch to strike first in the opening frame.
  • Grimes struck out the side in the top of the first inning. She came into the contest with just seven punch outs on the year.
  • Karissa Munsey's bases-clearing triple extended Cal State Bakersfield's advantage to 4-0 in the second inning.
  • This chased Grimes out of the game with one out in the second. Sarah Reineman was the next hurler to toe the rubber.
  • Polson and Starks led off the second inning with back-to-back singles.
  • Libbie McMahan scored Polson from third with her RBI ground out and Gia Felice cut the lead in half by bouncing one up the middle to drive in another run.
  • Marley Panziera made it a tie ballgame when she ripped a base hit through the left side to bring two more runs across.
  • The Aggies smacked six hits in their four-run second inning. UC Davis batted around in the frame.
  • With one out in the third frame, Cal State Bakersfield restored its lead. The Aggies nearly picked off a runner at third base, but Kaia Johnson evaded the rundown to steal home.
  • In the home half of the third, Nakahara grounded a base hit up the middle to score two runs, giving UC Davis its first lead of the series.
  • Polson smacked her second hit of the day in the bottom of the fourth, roping a double in the left-center gap to score Sydney Polli from first base.
  • Brown took over for Reineman in the fifth and earned the nine-out save after tossing three perfect innings in the circle.


THE RUNDOWN (GAME TWO)
  • Knocking in the first run of the game was Dethlefson, smashing a base hit up the middle to score Panziera.
  • Cal State Bakersfield evened the score with a two-out RBI base hit in the top of the third.
  • Panziera immediately restored the Aggies' lead with her opposite field home run in the bottom of the third.
  • UC Davis extended its lead when Dethlefson doubled off the left field wall before Polson promptly brought her home with her two-out single to right.
  • The lead grew to three in the home half of the fifth when Bella Pahulu lined a base hit right back up the middle, allowing Dethlefson to race home from second base.
  • Sarah Starks doubled down the left field line to spark a three-run rally in the sixth. 
  • Nakahara second hit of the game plated a run and Panziera drove in another with her sacrifice fly.


BY THE NUMBERS
  • Brown threw a total of 13 innings in the series, surrendering just one earned run while striking out 12.
  • Brown earns her fifth win of the year.
  • Polson, Pahulu, and Starks each enjoyed 3-for-7 days at the plate.

The Ags will head to Stockton for a midweek clash with Pacific on Apr. 2. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
