DAVIS, Calif. – Leah Polson provided the heroics in extra innings when UC Davis walked it off to take down Iowa on Monday afternoon at La Rue Field.
The Aggies (9-10) grab their third win of the walk-off variety this season. Kenedi Brown went the full nine innings in the win and was nothing short of brilliant, allowing just five hits and one earned run to grab her fourth win of the year.
Polson swung a hot bat all day long, going 4-for-7 over the two contests. The El Dorado Hills native drove in a pair of runs and smacked a triple on the afternoon.
Anna Dethlefson blasted her first home run of the season in her 3-for-5 day at the plate while Libbie McMahan and Gia Felice enjoyed multi-hit days.
GAME 1 | George Washington 8, UC Davis 0
A pair of defensive mishaps plagued the Aggies in the top of the first, allowing George Washington to rally for four runs to take a commanding lead in its first turn at the plate.
Brown was lifted after one inning of work, handing the ball over to Reinman to start the second frame. Reineman got through the second unscathed, but the visitors pushed another run across in the third to make it a 5-0 ballgame.
George Washington scored three more times in the fourth to put the game out of reach, coming away with the 8-0 run rule victory.
GAME 2 | UC Davis 3, Iowa 2 (F/9 inn.)
After two scoreless frames, Dethlefson broke the deadlock with a solo shot to left field, her first home run of the campaign.
Iowa used two hits and a walk to level the contest in the top of the fifth. The Aggies minimized the damage, however, when a well-executed relay cut down the go-ahead run at the plate to end the threat.
UC Davis immediately answered in the home half of the inning when Polson's infield hit brought Dethlefson around to score, restoring her team's one-run advantage.
In the next stanza, the Hawkeyes capitalized on a UC Davis error to score the tying run.
The two teams went scoreless for the next three frames until the Ags finally delivered the finishing blow in the bottom of the ninth. The rally started with two outs when
Gia Felice legged out an infield hit to represent the winning run. Dethlefson kept the line moving with a walk and McMahan won an 11-pitch battle, after fouling off seven pitches, with her sharp single through the left side to set the stage for Polson. The senior came through in the big moment, lifting a fly ball that dropped down the left field line to score the winning run for Davis' team.
