DAVIS, Calif. -- In the first game of the Capital Classic to take place at La Rue Field, UC Davis fell just short against their namesake rivals from Utah State, with a final tally of 3-2 on a rainy Friday morning.
Rookie sensation Ashley Sawai delivered a commendable performance in the circle, allowing just three runs while going the distance. Despite her efforts, the UC Davis offense struggled to capitalize, ultimately succumbing to the narrow defeat.
Sawai posted a solid line, allowing two earned runs on a total of seven hits, surrendering just one walk while striking out three. The freshman is tagged with her first loss of the year.
At the plate, the Aggies' offensive charge was spearheaded by veteran Libbie McMahan, who notched a 2-for-3 performance, including a double and an RBI. Complementing her was senior Sarah Starks, who also made her presence felt with a 1-for-3 outing, contributing an RBI to the cause.
The turning point came in the third inning, with UC Davis trailing by two. It was then that they managed to level the score, thanks in part to McMahan's pivotal run-scoring double.
However, Utah State responded by pushing one run across in the top of the fourth, which proved to be the winning run in the 3-2 ballgame.
