Davis Overcomes Double-Digit Deficit to Knock Off the Vandals in Midday Matchup

Score: UC Davis 65, Idaho 58
Location: Moscow, Idaho (ICCU Arena)
Records: UC Davis 7-4, Idaho 7-3

The short story: 19 points from Megan Norris led the way for the UC Davis women's basketball team as they came back from down 14 to beat the Idaho Vandals on Wednesday, Dec. 18.

OPENING TIP
  • Megan Norris collected her first double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 19 points to go along with 15 rebounds. She also blocked two Vandal shots.
  • Tova Sabel and freshman Avery Sussex also hit double-figures, scoring 13 and 10 respectively.
  • Ryann Bennett, also a freshman, came off the bench with nine points in 21 minutes.
  • The Aggies defended well at the three-point line, holding Idaho to 26.1% from beyond the arc.
  • Davis went 14-for-16 from the free-throw line.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Vandals opened the game on a 5-0 run, the Aggies responded quickly with seven points of their own.
  • Stifling defense on both ends of the court held each team to only five points each in the last five minutes of the first, with Davis holding a 12-10 lead.
  • Layups from Sydney Burns and Nya Epps gave their team a four-point lead in the first minute of the second.
  • But a 14-4 scoring run through the rest of the half from Idaho put them back out in front 26-20 as both teams went back to their locker rooms.
  • The third quarter started with much of the same, as the Vandals effectively attacked both inside and outside to build a 14-point lead three minutes into the period.
  • A balanced attack from the Aggie offense that featured two triples from Norris, and layups from freshman Avery Sussex quickly chipped away at the deficit before a jumper from Tova Sabel gave her team a 41-40 lead.
  • In the fourth, the offense kept on rolling with two straight threes from Norris and Sussex.
  • But Idaho refused to back down, using effective shooting to get as close as four with a minute left to play.
  • With momentum building on the other end, UC Davis stayed collected, knocking down seven of eight free throws down the stretch, which proved to be the difference maker in a 65-58 victory.

UP NEXT: The Aggies will have ten days off for the holidays before they jump back into action for their final preseason tuneup at home against the Keelhaulers of Cal Maritime on Saturday, Dec. 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
