A Tremendous Display of Resilience Versus UCSD on Senior Day

Score: No. 11 UC Davis 11, No. 12 UC San Diego 12
Location: DAVIS, Calif. (Schaal Aquatics Center)

The Short Story: After an electric comeback in the third period from a 9-4 deficit versus the Tritons. the Aggies tied it up 11-11 with six seconds left in the game. Despite the tremendous team effort, the Aggies fell to the Tritons on Senior Day by one point.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Today we honored the tremendous work and effort put in by our four graduating Aggies – Will Nomura, JT Kujawa, Aleix Aznar Beltran, and Holden Neach. From COVID to grad cap throwing, these Aggies have put everything into their team and have truly displayed a sense of Aggie Pride through and through.
  • Junior goalkeeper Frank Laptin had a successful game, shutting down ten Triton shot attempts, including one big penalty block.
  • Redshirt senior Tyler Mrkaich sent a game-high of five goals into the net, also adding two assists and a drawn exclusion.
  • Aleix Aznar Beltran and Tommy Kiesling each registered two goals, Beltran adding an assist and three steals into his contributions for the day.
  • In the third quarter, the Aggies had seemingly let the game slip – the Tritons scoring four before the Aggies responded to turn the tide. Mrkaich headlined the comeback, and the team came together with an incredible surge of energy.
  • Will Nomura and Colin Nicholls added a goal apiece, Nicholls' shot from Andrew Hitchcock's pass being the one to tie the game up with six seconds left.
  • After a quick cap change, the Tritons swapped their goalie for a field player to score on the 7 on 6 advantage with a second left in the game.
UP NEXT: To break up the weekend between now and conference, the Aggies will have an exhibition game versus the Alumni Water Polo Club, the last breath of competition before Big West Conference Championships is a-go.
