Aggies Sink the San Jose State Spartans

DAVIS, Calif. –    The swimming and diving team blew the Spartans out of the water in today's dual meet matchup with a final of 208-84 in the non-conference faceoff.

Of the 16 swim events and two diving showcases performed in the meet, 12 of them resulted in a first-place finish for the Aggies.

For the divers, senior Taylor Schwarz had a season best performance and topped the charts with an outstanding 262.20 in the three-meter dive. Junior Priscilla Nguyen followed closely in second with a 243.30, and sophomore Karina Giacomazza had a 230.48 to secure an Aggie sweep in the event.

In the one-meter event, Junior Leila Busch locked in first with a stunning 261.98, her personal best wearing an Aggie cap. Freshman Lauren Kudo was second with her impressive 248.48 finish.

The first Aggie win went to sophomore Nalanie Cortez for her performance in the long-haul 1,000 yard freestyle with a final time of 10:32.15. Junior Elena Gingras was neck-and-neck with Cortez, a 10:32.97 time awarded to her second place finish.

Sophomore Emily Scheberies clinched a crucial win in the 100 yard backstroke for the Ags with a time of 57.06, the second and third-place finishers being the opposing team. Senior Sam Rhodes repeated the action in the 100 yard breaststroke with a 1:03.28, the Spartans right on her heels as well.

The Aggies swept 1st through 4th place in the 200 yard butterfly; with help from Ellie Heit, Sarah Hardin, Summer Mitchell, and Ema Klimauskas in that order.

Following the sweep train, our distance swimmers took the top three spots in the 500 freestyle. Gingras and Cortez popped out a second stellar event, Gingras with a 5:06.56 for the first place finish and Cortez with a 5:11.51, and sophomore Elsie Luisetti sitting at third with a 5:11.80.

To round out an incredibly successful day, the Aggies took first in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:27.10, less than a second shy of setting a Schaal record. Power squad Katie McLain, Sophi Mackay, Christy Douglas, and Naomi Boegholm took care of business, a comfortable two seconds between them and the second place relay team.

That wasn't all for sophomore Naomi Boegholm, she secured the third spot in our pool records in the 50 freestyle event with her incredible 23.56 first place finish in today's meet.

In total Ellie Heit, Sam Rhodes, Katie McLain, Sophi Mackay, and Naomi Boegholm all came away with a pair of first place finishes.

"I felt like this was a nice way to end our fall dual meet season as we had many season best times across all groups this afternoon," praises head coach Matt Macedo. "Our team has focused on trying to make each meet better than the meet before and I feel our Aggies did just that today against San Jose State. I am excited to see what we can do in a couple weeks at our mid-season championship."

UP NEXT:  The Aggies will part ways as the swimmers take on the Utah Tech Trailblazer Invite and the divers will travel off to the Lumberjack Diving Invite hosted by Northern Arizona University.
