Set Scores: 19-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-14

The short story: 21 powerful kills from junior Jade Light and 17 by senior Olivia Utterback were plenty of offense for UC Davis volleyball as the Aggies retook first place in the Big West with a four-set comeback against CSUN on Thursday evening.

FIRST SERVE
  • Light hit .222 on the night, added two service aces and 13 digs
  • Utterback was on fire all night, hitting .432, added 12 digs and two service aces
  • Sophomore Mia Starr had a game-high 49 assists to lead the Aggie offense
  • The Aggies held the Matadors to under .160 in each of the final two sets
  • UC Davis had five service aces, while CSUN could only muster two
  • With the win, the Aggies retake first place in the conference with three matches left before the Big West Championships
WHAT HEAD COACH DAN CONNERS HAD TO SAY
"I think CSUN is a great team, and they have played everyone in the conference well this year. It was a slow start, but we figured it out as the night went along. I thought that Olivia [Utterback] and Jade [Light] had a consistent night and our passing was fantastic."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CSUN took the opening set, 25-19, pulling away late as things were as close as 18-17 late in the set
  • The Aggies needed to hold off the Matadors late in the second set, after going up 23-19 CSUN battled back to make it 22-23
  • The Matadors fought off an Aggie set point before Light took a set from Starr to wrap things up for the Aggies on a set-winning kill by Light giving Davis a 25-23 second set win
  • In the third, and what would eventually end up being the deciding set, the Aggies were down but not out late in the set, coming back from being down 17-13 to take the lead late at 24-23
  • CSUN again fought off set point to tie it up at 24-24 but the next two points would come from kills by Light and Utterback to secure the third set for UC Davis with a 26-24 win
  • UC Davis put CSUN away in the fourth set, pulling away in the middle to take a commanding 18-10 lead
  • Utterback's kill at 24-14 sealed the 25-14 fourth set win and a victory as the first place Aggies completed the comeback
UP NEXT: UC Davis remains at home when Cal State Bakersfield comes to town on Sunday, Nov. 17 for a 1 p.m. start.
