SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Ryan Torres advanced past Texas Christian's Pedro Vives in the opening round of the Battle in the Bay Classic before falling to Michigan State's Ozan Baris in the Round of 16 on Friday afternoon. 

Torres swept through the qualifying tournament in straight sets to earn a berth at the Battle in the Bay Classic, hosted by the University of San Francisco. 

The Aggie junior was leading Vives 5-2 on Thursday afternoon, before the Horned Frog succumbed to an injury. Vives was ranked as the 82nd best singles player in the ITA Preseason Poll.

Torres took three games from Baris, who won multiple matches in last year's NCAA tournament and entered preseason competition ranked No. 25 in the country. The Spartan went on to defeat his next two opponents in straight sets, and took the Battle in the Bay tournament singles crown in a three set battle against fellow Spartan Ronnie Hohmann.
