SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Chase Tanon's 80th minute goal rescued a hard-fought 2-2 draw for UC Davis in a chaotic matchup on the hilltop.
The Aggies will take a solid result away from home against a talented San Francisco side, but remain winless in their last four matches and are still searching for the program's first win on the hilltop.
In the first half action, the Aggies opened the scoring before immediately conceding an equalizer to make the score 1-1. The hosts started to grow in confidence in the second half, putting UC Davis under some heavy pressure before eventually netting their second goal. With less than 10 minutes left to play, the Aggies won a penalty that resulted in the levelling goal for Tanon.
Slightly against the run of play, UC Davis broke the deadlock in the 29
th minute when
Cason Goodman netted his fourth goal of the season following some brilliant work from
Ryan Dieter on the wing.
San Francisco quickly hit back to make the score 1-1 after winning a free kick in the 34
th minute. Elias Thomas got his name on the scoresheet and gave the hosts some confidence heading into the break.
The hosts started to show their strength in the second half, holding majority of the possession and putting the UC Davis backline under some massive pressure. USF eventually found their second goal through another set piece opportunity, scoring from Arjan Dosanjh's corner that found the head of Olivier Sylvain in the 51
st minute.
The Aggies struggled to bypass the Dons' midfield as they were unable to muster a second-half shot until the 80
th minute. San Francisco recorded 11 of its 14 shots in the second half as the team made some effective adjustments after the halftime break to grow into the game.
However, the match took a turn in a chaotic 80
th minute that saw the Aggies receive a penalty after
Declan Horio was pulled down in the box.
Chase Tanon stepped up to take the spot kick and saw his attempt saved, but the striker quickly pounced on the rebound and blasted a left-footed shot into the back of the net to level the score at 2-2 with less than 10 minutes to play.
Shortly after the equalizer, USF immediately came the other way and nearly restored their advantage. However, UC Davis' man between the posts,
Charles Janssen, was the hero yet again, coming up with an unbelievable double save to preserve the draw away from home.
