Jake Maier Set to Lead Calgary Stampeders in Season Opener

DAVIS, Calif. – Former Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year Jake Maier is set to lead the Calgary Stampeders in their Canadian Football League opener on Thursday. The UC Davis All-American is slated to start at quarterback for the Stampeders against the BC Lions.

Maier has appeared in 29 career games over the course of two seasons for Calgary. The La Habra, Calif. native has started 12 contests and thrown for 3,600 yards and 19 touchdowns, sporting a 71.1 completion percentage.

Last season Maier helped lead the Stampeders to the Western Semifinal and a 12-6 overall record. He threw for a CFL career-high 2,389 yards and 14 touchdowns, completing 74.7 percent of his passes in nine starts. His completion percentage ranked second in the league and his 106.6 rating was third overall.

Maier enjoyed a record-setting career at UC Davis. After transferring to the Aggie program from Long Beach City College, Maier is the career leader in attempts (1,495), completions (992) and yards (11,163). He also broke J.T. O'Sullivan's record with 21 300-yard games and ranks second to O'Sullivan in career touchdowns with 88.

In 2018, Maier led the Aggies to their first Big Sky Championship and FCS Playoff appearance with a 10-3 record. The signal-caller threw for 478 yards in the championship-clinching game in the 56-13 Causeway Classic victory.

The Aggies went on to earn their first FCS playoff victory in school history with a win against Northern Iowa. Maier threw for 310 yards in the 23-16 triumph.

In that record-setting 2018 campaign, Maier was named the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for a single-season school-record 3,931 yards with 34 touchdowns on a school record 364 completions.

Maier isn't the only former Aggie quarterback starting the 2023 season in the CFL. Khari Jones begins his first campaign with the Ottawa Redblacks as the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. Jones played 11 seasons in the professional ranks and was the 2011 CFL Most Outstanding Player.

Ottawa opens the season on Saturday against the Montreal Alouettes, the team he previously served as the head coach.
