Aggies Downed in Sunday Doubleheader

DAVIS, Calif. – The UC Davis softball team (27-19, 13-11) dropped the series to Cal Poly (17-22, 10-14) after falling in both games by identical 5-2 scores.

After the conclusion of game two, the Aggies celebrated four seniors. Those recognized after the doubleheader were Delaney Diaz, Taylor Fitzgerald, Alyssa Ito and Sommer Kisling.

GAME 1 | Cal Poly 5, UC Davis 2

The UC Davis Aggies took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning, but could not hang on to eventually fall 5-2 to Cal Poly in the first game of the doubleheader on Sunday.

The Aggies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first.

Anna Dethlefson singled to start off the ballgame and then broke the program's division I single season stolen base record when she swiped second. The stolen base was her 38th of the season.

A Sarah Starks fielder choice started the scoring for the Ags, plating Dethlefson.

The Aggies were unable to hold the lead, as Cal Poly scored five times over the remaining six innings to grab the 5-2 win. Delaney Diaz then scored Starks on a single to right-center.

In the sixth inning the Mustangs took the lead for good by scoring three runs in the frame. Cal Poly tacked on two more in the seventh to secure the victory.

Taylor Fitzgerald (5-4) started and took the loss in the circle. Fitzgerald scattered five hits, allowed three runs and struck out one.

GAME 2 | Cal Poly 5, UC Davis 2

The Aggies seized the lead in the first inning but once again the Mustangs were able to answer to claim the win.

Junior Kenedi Brown (15-9) got the ball to start for UC Davis and took the loss. Junior Sarah Reineman came out of the bullpen to throw two shutout innings, allowing no hits, and striking out one.

Starks collected two hits that included her first inning two-run home run.

Trailing 1-0, the Aggies again put a pair on the board. UC Davis plated two runs when Starks left the yard with Dethlefson aboard.

Cal Poly evened the score in the third and then scored three times in the fifth to win the series.

UC Davis will conclude the regular season on the road at Hawai'i. The three-game series will begin on Thursday, May 11.
