HONOLULU – The UC Davis softball team (27-20, 13-12) took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning but could not hold onto the victory as Hawai'i (30-21, 13-12) plated two runs in the sixth and the game-winner in the seventh to secure the series opening win, 3-2, Thursday evening.
Junior Kenedi Brown (15-10) cruised through five innings until the Rainbow Wahine finally got to the righthander. Brown went 6.2 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, scattering seven hits, while striking out five.
Junior Libbie McMahan went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior Anna Dethlefson also added a double to start the contest. Sophomore Bella Pahulu also batted 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Aggies got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Dethlefson came across to score the lone run of the frame on a McMahan fielder's choice.
The Aggies built on their lead in the sixth inning when McMahan scored on a single from Pahulu, which brought the Aggies lead to 2-0.
After back-to-back singles to start the bottom half, a double from Haley Johnson evened the score. Hawai'i walked it off on a throwing error in the seventh.
The two teams will close out the series with a doubleheader tomorrow. The first game will begin at 7 p.m. PT. The twin-bill can be streamed on ESPN+ and can be seen on Spectrum Sports.
