Honolulu, Hawai'i — Despite picking up seven hits in the ballgame and out-hitting Hawai'i, UC Davis was unable to overcome three unearned runs which came back to haunt them, as the Aggies fell to the Rainbow Warriors 5-3 Thursday night.
Bryan Green (5-2), usually the "Friday night guy" got the start on this quick turnaround Thursday for UC Davis (17-28, 7-15) and took the loss. The southpaw went 5.1 innings, giving up four runs, only two earned, on five hits, allowing three walks and striking out four. Alejandro Huezo and Nate Freeman both entered out of the bullpen and allowed no earned runs, giving UC Davis a great chance to keep the game within striking distance. Huezo ended up throwing 1.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit, with no walks and two strikeouts. Freeman pitched 1.0 inning and went three up three down in his appearance.
At the plate, the Aggies were paced by slugger, Jack Gallagher, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run in his first at-bat, a walk and two RBI. Damian Stone contributed the other Aggie RBI on the night, going 2-for-4 with a walk. James Williams III also chipped in for UC Davis, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double, bringing his season total to 15 doubles, which ranks second on the team. Nick Iverson was all over the field as well, coming up with an amazing catch in the bottom of the seventh in foul territory while also going 2-for-4 with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning when Gallagher left the yard with Williams aboard.
The Aggies then held the Rainbow Warriors scoreless before expanding their lead in the fifth inning. UC Davis scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Stone, which brought the Aggies lead to 3-0.
