Cosand Enjoys Career Day; Sun Devils Down Aggies

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Despite a high-powered first quarter, UC Davis women's lacrosse suffered its third consecutive defeat, falling 16-11 to Arizona State on Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies (7-6) were out-shot 39-23 as the Sun Devils were dominant on the offensive side of the ball. UC Davis tallied just 19 shots on target, which is their lowest mark of the season.

Grace Gebhardt enjoyed her sixth game with three or more goals, firing a team-high seven shots to pace the UC Davis attack. Rhea Cosand racked up a career-high four goals in an outstanding performance from the freshman.

In goal, Ashley Laing recorded her 10th game with double-digit saves, making 13 stops on the day.

How It Happened

The Aggies struck first when Cosand found the back of the net in the early stages before Alex Agnew doubled the lead a few minutes later. Gebhardt made it a three-goal advantage when UC Davis capitalized on a powerplay chance just under the 10-minute mark. Arizona State answered, however, and found its way back into the game with a pair of goals to cut the deficit to just one. Scoring her second goal of the match was Gebhardt, from yet another powerplay opportunity, restoring the two-goal advantage. The sophomore went on to complete her first-quarter hat trick to extend the lead to three at the end of the first 15 minutes.

The Sun Devils scored early in the second period but Cosand would immediately reply for the Aggies, netting a free position chance. ASU then gained some momentum, rallying for three straight goals to level the score at 6-6, and added two more before the end of the half to make the score 8-7 at the break. Arizona State out-scored UC Davis 6-2 in the second period after finding rhythm on the offensive end.

The Aggies struggled to contain the prolific Arizona State attack in the second half as the Sun Devils raced out to a six-goal lead in the fourth quarter. Ella Brislin and Alannah Scott got their names on the scoresheet, but ASU would hold on for the 16-11 win.
