Aggies Split Big West Doubleheader Against UC San Diego

DAVIS, Calif. – The UC Davis softball team split its first two games of its series against UC San Diego on Saturday. The Aggies fell in game one, 2-1, and then rallied in the nightcap to win by that same 2-1 score. After the day, the Ags move to 25-14 overall and 11-6 in Big West play.

In a day full of celebration that featured the recognition of the 20-year anniversary of the 2003 National Championship team and the celebration of life of Hall of Fame Coach Kathy DeYoung, the Aggie played in two gritty contests.

GAME 1 | UCSD 2, UC Davis 1

UCSD's two-run first proved to be the difference in the ballgame, as the UC Davis Aggies lost a heartbreaker to the Tritons by the score of 2-1 in the first game of the doubleheader at La Rue Field.

Junior Kenedi Brown (13-7) was tagged with the loss in the circle. The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Junior Sarah Reineman was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out one.

At the plate, the Aggies were paced by junior Sarah Starks, who went 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Junior Anna Dethlefson added a 1-for-3 effort with a double, a stolen bases and a walk.

Trailing 2-0, the Aggies tried to mount a comeback in the seventh inning. Starks put UC Davis on the board with a leadoff home run off sophomore Jada Cecil. The Aggies were unable to get anyone else across in the final frame.

GAME 2 | UC Davis 2, UCSD 1

It was a closely contested ballgame, but UC Davis used a fifth-inning rally to secure the 2-1 lead – a lead they would not relinquish.

Senior Sommer Kisling made history in the second game of the day as her start pushed her career games played total to a Division I program record 210 games.

Junior Taylor Fitzgerald (5-3) started in the circle and picked up the win for UC Davis. The right-hander went six innings, giving up one run on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out one. Freshman Caroline Grimes threw a scoreless final frame, allowing one hit, with no walks and one strikeout to earn her first collegiate save.

Junior Libbie McMahan went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior Anna Dethlefson also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two more stolen bases. Senior Delaney Diaz added a double.

Trailing 1-0, the Aggies first got on the board in the third inning. UC Davis got an RBI single from Dethlefson, scoring freshman Gia Felice.

The score stayed at 1-1 until the fifth inning, when the Aggies took the lead for good. UCD pushed across the winning run on McMahan's two-out RBI double that plated Dethlefson after another swiped bag. The score remained 2-1 for the rest of the game, as UC Davis held on for the win.

The two teams will meet in the rubber-match tomorrow at 11 a.m.
