Aggies Finish the Regular Season with Two Weekend Matches

DAVIS, Calif. — The UC Davis women's tennis team ends the regular season with two matches this week, a Friday road trip to Sacramento State, and a home match and Senior Day celebration on Saturday against Long Beach State. First serve is 1:30 p.m. on Friday, and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

ABOUT THE AGGIES
UC Davis (8-11, 3-5 Big West) will look to build winning momentum with the Big West tournament just a week away. The Aggies are seventh in the Big West, but could rise to sixth if things break their way to end the season.

The women's tennis team has been fantastic in doubles competition this season and have won the first point of the match seven consecutive times. Michelle Zell and partner Carly Schwartzberg have been holding it down for the Aggies on court three, winning their last five matches. Yana Gurevich and Arianna Stavropoulos have been similarly excellent as a duo, with an 11-2 record to prove it.

In singles play, Gurevich is 6-2 in her last eight completed matches and Stavropoulos is 7-3 in her last 10.

ABOUT THE HORNETS
Sacramento State (9-10, 4-4 Big Sky) can secure its first .500 record since 2016 with a win on Friday. Their nine wins so far this season equals the combined amount they won in the three seasons prior.

Mayya Gorbunova, a junior from Moscow, has been the singles star for the Hornets this season, posting 13 wins in 18 matches. Gorbunova has been in a cold spell recently, though, having lost three of her last four matches.

The Sacramento State Tennis Courts have been a tough place for visiting teams to find wins. The Hornets have an 8-1 home record, and three of those eight wins have been shutouts.

The Aggies have won the last five matches between the two programs.

ABOUT THE BEACH
Long Beach State (8-9, 4-3 Big West) is a traditional Big West powerhouse program having an off year this season. The Beach are 13-time Big West tournament champions and have beaten the Aggies in 15 consecutive matches, going back to 2008 when UC Davis was admitted into the conference.

The Beach are led by their dominant doubles partnership of Rhona Cook and Peppi Rendstadt, who are 15-4 together. Long Beach has also seen quality singles play from Justine Dondonay, Sheena Masuda and Hana Becirovic Novak.

Long Beach is currently the sixth seed in the Big West conference standings, but a win on Saturday could propel them up as high as third.
