UC Davis fights back from late deficit, beats CSU Bakersfield 14-7

Bakersfield, Calif. — After trailing 7-1, the UC Davis Aggies stormed to score 13 runs in three innings to take the series win over CSU Bakersfield with a 14-7 comeback victory.

Propelling the comeback effort for UC Davis was a go-ahead grand slam from Jack Gallagher in the eighth inning to take an 8-7 lead after being down 7-1 for most of the night. 



Junior Kaden Hogan (1-1) got the win out of the bullpen for UC Davis (9-13, 3-5). The right-hander went two shutout innings, giving up just two hits, no walks and striking out two. Throwing back-to-back days, Hogan delivered yet again and in the process, picked up his first career pitching victory. 

Ian Torpey also pitched well, eating up the most innings by an Aggie pitcher today, going 2.2 shutout innings while allowing only two hits.

While Gallagher sparked the comeback offensively for the Aggies, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and four RBI, Alex Gouveia continued his dominance, as he would finish the night going 3-for-6 with two doubles and two RBI. The conference leader in doubles (12) improves his season average to .348 and has recorded three straight games of three hits. 

Junior Damian Stone also contributed, going 2-for-5 for UC Davis with a walk and two RBI. With another two hits tonight, Stone has now extended his current hitting streak to a team-high nine games in a row with a knock.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. UC Davis got on the board thanks to a Gouveia RBI double with one out. With the hot start all seemed well untile thr Roadrunners answered back with five runs in the bottom half of the first.

The Roadrunners then rallied to score seven runs and take a 7-1 lead before the Aggies got back on the board in the seventh. UC Davis scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Stone, which tightened the Roadrunners lead to 7-4.

UC Davis held the Roadrunners off the scoreboard before rallying to grab a 10-7 lead in the eighth. The Aggies bats heated up in the inning, scoring six runs, including a grand slam off the bat of Gallagher.

UC Davis held the Roadrunners scoreless before their offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Aggies scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of sophomore Nick Leehey, bringing the score to 14-7 in favor of UC Davis. The score remained 14-7 for the rest of the game, as the Cardiac Aggies earned their second series win of the season. 

The Aggies will finalize the series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. PT at Hardt Field.
