Bakersfield, Calif. — UC Davis received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, but the Aggies fell to the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 7-1 Sunday. Outhitting the Roadrunners during the game, UC Davis had opportunities to cut into their deficit but were shutdown by solid defensive plays across the board from the opposition, and a strong pitching effort.
Sophomore Carter Delaney (0-1) got the ball to start for UC Davis (9-14, 3-6) and took the loss. Super effective early on, the Roadrunner offense would chip away and score six runs during Delaney's 3.1 innings pitched.
Trying to keep the game within striking distance, the Aggie bullpen limited the damage to just one run in which they were responsible for. Junior Danny Carrion appeared in his second game of the series for the Aggies, and would throw 1.1 shutout innings, allowing no hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
Junior Alex Gouveia led the way offensively for the Aggies, going 3-for-5 in the ballgame. Seeing the ball as good as anyone in the country, Gouveia raised his season batting average to .361 and recorded three hits in all four games this week. His effort puts him in clear contention for a Big West Field Player of the Week award.
Sophomore Mark Wolbert was the other lone Aggie in the lineup to record multiple hits, as he would end the day going 2-for-5 with the Aggies' only RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning off the bat of a Wolbert single, bringing home Nick Iverson from second base. The Aggies were unable to hold this early lead, as CSU Bakersfield scored seven unanswered runs over the remaining six innings to grab the 7-1 win.
