Williams III racks up 3 hits in UC Davis' loss to Sacramento State

Sacramento, Calif. -- The UC Davis Aggies got three hits out of senior James Williams in a 9-6 loss to the Sacramento State Hornets Tuesday.

Junior Andrew LaCour (0-1) took the loss on the mound for UC Davis (5-5). Freshman Max Hippensteel was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out two.

Williams' three hit day was highlighted by a double and an RBI. Sophomore Nick Leehey stayed active as well, putting together a noteworthy day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and two RBI. Junior Nick Iverson also helped out for UC Davis in his return to the lineup, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Aggies put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. UC Davis plated two runs off of Sacramento State pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Iverson.

The Aggies lost the lead they built in the second, but got back on the board in the third trailing 3-2. which brought the score to 5-3 in favor of the Aggies.

UC Davis' lead had disappeared by the time the seventh inning arrived and turned into a 9-5 Sacramento State advantage, when the Aggies cut that deficit to 9-6. The Aggies picked up a run on Leehey's two-out RBI double. The Aggies were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
