Baseball falls to Arizona State, 7-1

Phoenix, Ariz. — The UC Davis Aggies struggled on Friday to get the bats going, and as a result, ended up falling to the Arizona State Sun Devils 7-1.

Nate Freeman once again got the ball to start for UC Davis (5-6) and took his fourth loss on the season. Allowing 11 hits and six earned runs, Freeman was tasked with facing a Sun Devil team eager to get back into the win column. Backing up Freeman was sophomore Carter Delaney who was a bright spot for the Aggies, throwing 3.1 shutout innings, allowing two hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. After Delaney, the Aggies turned to Max Hippensteel and Ian Torpey who both threw an inning. Hippensteel allowed three hits and one earned run while Torpey bounced back from his Sacramento State start and allowed no runs.

Offensively for the Aggies, James Williams III contributed the lone extra-base hit, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a double. Freshman Braydon Wooldridge continues to impress as a freshman and came through with a standout performance at the plate, going 2-for-4 and the accounting for the only Aggie with multiple hits in the game. Alex Gouveia while hitless, delivered the lone RBI for the Aggies with a sac fly in the third inning to score Wooldridge.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Aggies first put runs on the board in the third inning. Wooldridge came across to score the lone run of the inning for UC Davis and get them on the board. The Aggies were unable to get any closer, as Arizona State added five runs to their tally on the way to a 7-1 final.
